“Fragrant grass waves along the river,
a Chinese egret rests alone at leisure.
Floating dust gone with the long night;
worldly worries disappear with peace in heart.”

I acquired a vintage flamingo brooch in New Haven by chance. For a long time I’ve been fascinated with this kind of bird, and its long, slender neck reminds me of Chinese egret. However, they differ vastly in terms of habits and temperaments. While flamingo enjoys living in groups, Chinese egret prefers solitariness, just like the differences in two cultures. So I came up with the idea of a Chinese flamingo, who rests alone on a river land, accompanied by shells and rocks from Boston. This imagined bird bears mixed characteristics of the two. “Flamingo Pond” now belongs to Cherry in New York.
