This box set is designed specifically for the exhibition - Zhe Zhu: Vanitas. Instead of the binding most galleries do for their exhibition photobooks. We decided not to bind the pages. Each image is separated from each other. A photography series is normally seen as a narrative so the order of images is highly valued. However it's not the same case this time since each photo has its own different approach to traditional Dutch still life. The way we presented this set is that each photo is placed next to its detail images. The photographic advantage is impossible to show on such a small piece of paper. A photo cut out can show the resolution of the original photo. And it's fun to find it from the exhibition print.
We made a lot adjustment during proofing. For instance we changed the paper choice from a raw, matte surface to another kind for wider color range. Three different kinds of paper were chosen for this set. 3 are semi-transparent tracing paper with text, allowing the image underneath to be seen subtly. The black cardboard paper we use for the package is imported from Japan. It had a very decent smell when we first received it. In order to add some interesting element with a simplistic approach, a metal embossing stamp machine was custom made. It excels at delivering subtle logos.
